Race for club championship 'hots-up' as Dave James takes victory

Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club (LPRC) drivers were met with glorious sunshine at Carr Mill Dam, St Helens on Sunday 22nd July, for the fourth race of the annual club-racing calendar where they competed for the Mortgage Option Trophy.

With Top Cat Racing Teams’ Mike Pillow, from Welshpool winning all races so far in season, he was the one they all wanted to catch, and catch him they did!

The first race was won by Stuart Williams, from Warrington, with Mike not far behind securing the second position. Bill Owen, from St Helens took third and Dave James, from Warrington battled hard in the wake and wash left by all the other drivers, but after getting stuck in the rough water had to settle for fourth place.

In races two and three, it was a totally different story. Dave James stormed ahead in his boat numbered 22 to win both of the remaining races. With Stuart and Bill both taking a second place each, leaving Mike to settle for third. The two wins was enough, Dave took the glory and clinched the overall victory of the day. A great afternoon, of closely fought edge of the seat racing.

Although Stuart Williams did not win overall, he should be really proud of his performance. He took the honor of fastest race lap with a time of just 55.36 seconds.

After the race, a jubilant Dave James said: “It was a really enjoyable race today, I am really pleased to win and take home the trophy. The conditions were ideal and my boat was flying. It was a tough drive and on a few occasions I was pushing it very close to the limit, with the nose of the boat pointing the wrong way, high into the air. But I managed to stay in control and keep the boat the right way up and in front of the other drivers. Its great to be back on winning form and I am now really looking forward to our next club race, at Carr Mill Dam on Sunday 9th September. And hopefully I have a chance to win again.”

With Dave taking this victory for the Last of the Summer Wine racing team, it starts to open up the challenge for the club championship and will make the next race, on 9th September a great one to watch.

The spectators at the Dam, also saw one of our Junior drivers, Charlotte Newton in her GT15 boat and Graham Palfreyman in his new Formula 2 catamaran. The pair both took to the water to get in some valuable testing and drive time, ahead of the National Sprint Championships that take place in two weeks time at Stewartby Lake in Bedfordshire on 4th and 5th August.

Final Race results for the Mortgage Option trophy:

1st David James, 2nd Stuart Williams, Joint 3rd Mike Pillow and Bill Owen.
